What size urn do I need?
In general, the cremains of 1 pound of weight can be housed in 1 cubic inch of capacity. Please see section on ‘Which Urn?’ for further detail.
NOTE: Cremated remains can vary due to different cremation processes, therefore please only use our guide as an estimate.
How do I transfer the ashes to the urn?
You will receive the ashes in some form of container either from the crematorium or funeral director. Place this container inside the urn and carefully release the ashes. It is advisable to have some assistance here. If this is something you are not comfortable doing- you could ask the funeral director to help you. If it helps, we can send your urn directly to the funeral director and the cremation ashes can be placed in the urn there.
What should I do with my Urn?
Urns that hold cremated remains can be placed in a niche in a columbarium, placed in a crypt in a mausoleum, buried or kept in a special place at home. You can also scatter ashes and keep the urn as a memorial in your home or garden.
Can I put personal items in with my loved one's cremated remains?
Yes. Some customers scatter the ashes and then keep other personal items in the urn such as a lock of hair or photograph. Others put these other items in with the ashes. The choice is very personal. However, if you intend to put in other items –please ensure the urn is large enough.
How do cremation urns open?
This depends on the design, but generally they will have a threaded screw top lid. They can also open from the back or bottom too. This latter is especially true for pet cremation urns.
Do you recommend sealing the urn?
Depending on the closure, you do not need to seal the lid. Brass urns have a threaded lid enabling secure closure. If you would like to you can get an appropriate sealant from you local DIY store.
What is a keepsake urn?
A keepsake urn is very small urn used to keep a token amount of cremains (ashes). This is ideal if a number of family members want a token of ashes for themselves. It is also useful if the majority of ashes need to be scattered in another country or place far from home as it allows a token amount to be kept near at all times.
What is keepsake jewellery?
This is usually in the form of a pendant that can be worn around the neck or as a charm on a bracelet. Its cavity holds a very small amount of ashes (approx quarter of a teaspoon to one teaspoon- dependant on size). This is a very discreet way of keeping a loved one close at all times and provides many with inner peace and consolation.
How do I fill my keepsake jewellery?
Keepsake jewellery will come with a presentation box, funnel and instructions to fill your jewellery. There will be a screw top or plug in the back or bottom to enable access. If you do not feel comfortable filling your own jewellery, a funeral director may be able to help you.
Will the contents of the jewellery be secure?
Once the plug is in- the contents should be secure- however for that extra peace of mind you could add a small amount of super glue or epoxy resin. Although the pendant will be somewhat waterproof, we do not recommend wearing it in the swimming pool or in the shower.
Can I use an urn not listed as a pet urn, for my pet? Y
es. It’s your choice what design you like be it for human or pet. Both pet and human urns have the same functionality.
