In 1944, at the young age of 18, Queen Elizabeth, who was still a princess at that time, was appointed a counsellor of state during the king's absence on a tour of the Italian battlefield. She carried out some duties as head of the state for the first time.
On July 7, 2005, four suicide bombers attacked London's public transportation system, killing 56 people, including the bombers, and injuring hundreds. Queen Elizabeth addressed the country, saying, "Atrocities such as these simply reinforce our sense of community, our humanity and our trust in the rule of law."
